This public symposium aims to engage built environment professionals, academics and members of the general public to discuss past and future infrastructure developments in Hong Kong. The symposium will include short talks by Heather Coulson and several prominent engineers and environment professionals who were involved with infrastructure projects during the 1970s and 1980s. Speakers will share their experiences and reflect on Hong Kong’s infrastructure legacy, followed by informal dialogues with audience.
公開研討會旨在促進建築環境界專業人士、學者以及公眾參與討論香港過去與未來的基建發展。研討會上，Heather Coulson以及曾參與1970及1980年代基建工程的重要工程師與環境界專業人士會發表簡短演講。講者會分享他們的經歷以及他們對香港基建遺產的思考，然後與觀眾進行對話。

Mr Coulson, a founding council member of the Hong Kong Association of Consulting Engineer, moved to Hong Kong in 1970 and was involved with the completion of the cross-harbour road tunnel. He was later responsible for the overall design of the Initial System of the Mass Transit Railway and the civil engineering and building works for Castle Peak B Station among other projects. In 1988 he returned to UK but remained responsible for overseas projects.

A leading construction and architectural photographer in Hong Kong for 18 years (1971 to 1988), Mrs. Coulson was involved in many prestigious projects that were carried out in what has been described as the golden period of construction in Hong Kong.

Over the past 39 years, Mr Lo primarily worked in power plant constructions covering Castle Peak Power Station, Penny’s Bay Power Station and Black Point Power Station projects, while the rest of the times worked as Maintenance Engineer in Black Point Power Station and in Castle Peak Power Station.

As former Permanent Secretary for Development (Works) for the Development Bureau of the HK SAR Government, Ir Mak has made enormous contributions to the development of Hong Kong’s railway system, in leading large infrastructure projects to meet the needs of the territory’s population growth and economic development, and in pursuing initiatives for promoting good industry practices and site safety. Recognising the importance of quality development, Ir Mak lent his leadership to the formulation of works and heritage conservation policies for Hong Kong.

Mr. Roberts is former Global CEO & Global Board Director of Aedas. With over 30 years of architectural experience focusing on Hong Kong & Asia, he has developed considerable expertise in Hong Kong, the PRC, the Asia region, and also the Middle East on a wide spectrum of projects. He set up dpr Consultants Limited in June 2013, providing consultancy services to the Real Estate and Development Industry shortly after he left Aedas International Limited (“Aedas”).

Professor Rowlinson arrived Hong Kong in 1987 to join the Department of Civil Engineering at HKU; and moved to the Department of Real Estate and Construction in 1991. He has written books on construction site safety and procurement systems and has supervised over 30 PhD students. He was the recipient of the CIC/Lighthouse Club Golden Helmet award for Safety Leadership in 2015.
Steve Rowlinson教授於1987年到港加入香港大學土木工程系，隨後於1991年進入房地產及建設系。他曾出版關於建設工地安全以及採購制度的書籍，指導超過30位博士生。2015年他獲得明建會安全領導金冠獎。
Infrastructure Imagination showcases major infrastructure projects completed in Hong Kong between 1972 to 1988. The infrastructure expansions in this period are significant not only in their unprecedented scales and complexities, but also in their utopian undertones, grounded on a burgeoning optimism of economic and social progress. The design and construction of these megaprojects drew substantial technology transfers and attracted global expertise to overcome the technical challenges of building on Hong Kong’s difficult terrain. The arrival of new infrastructure systems in this period also facilitated major transformation of the urban landscape, generating new collective experiences for Hong Kong citizens and reshaping everyday community life.
The exhibition is divided into four sections: 1) Mass Transit Railway, 2) Highways & Tunnels, 3) Electricity Networks, and 4) Water Works. Each section consists of displays of large-format photographs as well as scaled drawings that illustrate the physical configurations of selected projects. These are supplemented with video footage and archival records that document the construction boom in Hong Kong in the 1970s and 1980s.
The exhibition aims to provide an opportunity for the public to reflect on the city’s urban change and renewal and to envision ways for building a more sustainable future in the 21st century.
“基建與想像”展出香港1972至1988年間竣工的主要基建工程。這一時期的基建擴展不僅規模與複雜程度空前，工程顯示出的烏托邦意味更反映了香港當時對經濟與社會進步的樂觀心態。這些大型項目的設計與興建引領了重要技術的轉移，在香港地勢上進行建設的艱巨挑戰吸引了當時全球先進的工程專才。新基建系統的興建也促成了這一時期城市景觀的重大改變，創造了一系列新的集體經歷，重塑了香港人的日常社區生活。
展覽分成四個部分：1）地下鐵路，2）公路與隧道 ，3）電力設施，以及4）供水工程。每一部分展示大型攝影作品以及顯示工程構造的圖紙，另外附有視像片段與記錄1970與1980年代香港基建高峰的文獻資料。
展覽旨在為公眾提供一個機會去思考城市的變化與更新，以及設想建設21世紀可持續發展未來的途徑。
Photographs of the exhibition are drawn from the Heather Coulson Photograph Collection, which was generously donated to the University of Hong Kong Libraries by Heather Coulson, a leading construction and architectural photographer who worked in Hong Kong from 1971 to 1988. Coulson was commissioned to undertake many prestigious infrastructure projects, including the Cross Harbour Tunnel, Mass Transit Railway, Castle Peak Power Station, Plover Cove Water Works and other important public projects.
The exhibition includes a special section that features the career of Coulson. Beyond providing valuable records of the construction process, Coulson’s photographs captured the humanistic, cultural and social dimensions of large-scale construction with a highly sensitive, artistic approach to composition, scale and materiality of her subjects. This section includes video footage of an interview with Coulson that contextualizes her work within the field of construction photography in the past and present.

Members of local communities and stakeholder groups, including those who have been involved with infrastructure construction, are invited to share their memories and perspectives of urban change related to infrastructure developments in the past and discuss their aspirations for building a better city in the future.
工作坊會邀請地區社群成員以及持份者團體，包括曾參與基建建設的人士，分享他們對基建發展帶來城市變化的回憶與想法，以及討論他們對未來建設更好的城市的希望。
